Scientists say there is no need for alarm following the discovery of a new HIV strain, but that this serves as a reminder that the HIV pandemic implores the world to remain a step ahead by leveraging on existing advancements in technology and resources to understand its full scope.
The SA National Aids Council Trust explains that the new discovery is a sub-type of a known existing group and is from a sample collected many years ago.
Sanac has congratulated the scientists for the discovery which it says can help ensure that new pandemics are stopped in their tracks.
