The Commission for Gender Equality says the Department of Basic Education should revise its draft guidelines on school uniforms.
The commission says that uniforms should be inclusive and not infringe on children’s rights.
Commissioner Busisiwe Deyi said the department should make school uniforms gender-neutral, to protect children of the LGBTQI+ community.
Deyi says uniforms should not be used as mechanisms to discriminate against gender nonconforming, transgender, and gender-queer children.
