Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says more than 1600 people died on the roads during the 2021 Festive Season.
Mbalula today released the 2021 Festive Season Road Stats.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded a significant 6.5% decline in fatalities. The province recorded 275 fatalities as compared to 294 in the same period last year.
The minister also announced that he’s decided to appeal the ruling of the High Court in Pretoria declaring the AARTO Act unconstitutional and invalid.
Mbalula says the planned demerit system for traffic offenses will assist in fatalities on the roads which increased by 14% recorded over the festive season some due to negligent driving.
