African Union Chairperson, President Cyril Ramaphosa says they need to reaffirm their commitment to the full and successful implementation of the AU Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa.

Ramaphosa has been officially opening the 14th Extraordinary Session on Silencing the Guns.

This session is to assess the progress they have made since 2013 when the AU adopted the Agenda 2063 flagship project of ‘Silencing the Guns’ by 2020.

Ramaphosa has condemned the acts of violence, terrorism and violent extremism seen in the Sahel region and that are now spreading to other parts of the continent, including Mozambique.

He says they need to address the root causes of conflict in societies through a multifaceted approach.

“The union needs to address the continued exclusion of women in the economic, political and social spheres. We welcome the ongoing efforts to create a conducive environment for the effective participation of women and youth in peace and development processes,” Ramaphosa adds.
