National Treasury says government debt has risen by over half a trillion rand to R3.8 trillion.

The country borrowed an additional R562.6-billion in the fiscal year ended March 2021. This drove the national stock of debt listed on the JSE to hit R3.8 trillion, up from R3.2 trillion in the fiscal year ended March 2020.

Government debt accounts for 74.5 % of total national debt, which is also taken out by state owned entities and private corporations, among others.

National Treasury Deputy Director General Duncan Perterse says government finances are under pressure.
