The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has appointed senior counsel to recover R78.7-million after SAA Technical appointed a company to assist in a turnaround strategy.

The investigation focused on allegations that South African Airways followed irregular processes in appointing a service provider, for business process management services and revenue assurance management services.

The SIU’s Zodwa Xesibe says the two awarded contracts were found to have been procured irregularly.

Meanwhile, Xesibe says there are five possible criminal referrals concerning its investigation regarding Denel and Saudi Arabia Military Industries.

It is alleged that the intellectual property belonging to Denel was misappropriated in cohesive criminal conduct to abet foreign state companies.

The foreign state companies involved are SAMI, and a state-owned company in the United Emirates, Barij Dynamics.

Xesibe says they are looking to invoke extradition treaties or agreements to extradite the people identified to face charges in South Africa.
