The government has implemented a six months ban on the sale and export of scrap metal.
Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition Ebrahim Patel told the media the aim is to make it harder for criminals to hold and sell stolen copper cable and scrap metal, which costs the economy over 47-billion-rand in damages annually.
Patel says the ban period will also allow the government to finalise a planned licensing system for copper trading, which will be launched in six months.
