Written by on 3 June, 2020

Tax Justice South Africa has welcomed a High Court judgment that declared some of the lockdown regulations invalid and unconstitutional.

The organisation has urged President, Cyril Ramaphosa, to lift the ban on the sale of cigarettes immediately.

They were reacting after the North Gauteng High Court declared some of the national lockdown regulations for level three and four unconstitutional and invalid.

Tax Justice South Africa founder Yusuf Abramjee, says the judgment gives government 14 days to put its house in order.

Meanwhile the South African First Forum says government must take note of the court ruling that lockdown levels four and three are invalid and unconstitutional.

The organisation’s advocate, Rod Solomons, says the ruling in essence means that ministers do not have free reign to just do as they wish and issue regulations that are not balanced and well thought through.
