Team South Africa Shines at the 33rd Olympics in Paris

The 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris, France has officially concluded, and what an incredible event it was for Team South Africa! Our athletes delivered outstanding performances, walking away with a total of six medals—double the number from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic flame was officially extinguished during an elaborate closing ceremony Sunday, officially ending the 2024 Paris Games as Los Angeles takes over for 2028.

 

Tatjana Smith: The Golden Girl of South Africa

Leading the charge was Tatjana Smith, who secured two of South Africa’s six medals. Smith made history by winning gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke, marking Team SA’s only gold medal of the games. Her stellar performance didn’t stop there; she also claimed a silver medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke, further solidifying her status as one of the world’s top swimmers.

 

South African Men’s 4x100m Relay Team: A Force to Be Reckoned With

The South African men’s 4x100m relay team proved to be nearly unstoppable, delivering an electrifying performance that earned them a silver medal. The team, consisting of Akani Simbine (30), Shaun Maswanganyi (23), Sinesipho Dambile (22), Bradley Nkoana (19), and Bayanda Walaza (18), showcased a perfect blend of experience and youthful energy. Their teamwork and determination placed them among the best in the world, making the nation proud.

 

Alan Hatherly: Conquering the Mountains

Cyclist Alan Hatherly added to South Africa’s medal tally by securing a bronze medal in the Men’s Cross-Country Cycling Mountain Bike race. His endurance and skill on the challenging Parisian course earned him a well-deserved spot on the podium, highlighting his dedication and prowess in the sport.

 

South African Sevens Rugby Team: Powering Through to Bronze

The South African Sevens Rugby Team kicked off Team SA’s medal haul with a hard-fought victory in the third-place playoff against Australia. The team dug deep to secure a 26–19 win, bringing home a bronze medal. Their tenacity and teamwork exemplified the spirit of South African rugby, setting the tone for the rest of the team’s success at the games.
