A sensational day for Temba Bavuma as he hit 171 runs not out during South Africa’s first innings. The Proteas hit a score of 287 – 7 and had an overall lead of 356 runs. Bavuma made a battling, and at times, a punchy 171 runs, the highest score by a South Africa captain since Hashim Amla’s 201 against England in Cape Town in January 2016.

The 32 year old batsman has previously been criticised for failing to convert half-centuries into centuries. Before this match, he had 20 Test half centuries in his 55 match Test career. His only century before this was his unbeaten 102 runs in the New Year’s test in 2016 against England in his home town, Cape Town.

Speaking after the match, Bavuma said his second century has been a long time coming.
