Thousands of Gauteng taxi commuters stranded due to strike

Written by on 22 June, 2020

Thousands of Gauteng taxi commuters have been left stranded due to a shutdown by several associations.

The industry says the government’s over one-billion-rand relief support for the industry is not enough.

According to reports, taxis are blocking main roads to Pretoria and pulling people from buses and private cars.

Meanwhile Transport minister, Fikile Mbalula, says he has noted with concern the announcement by the Gauteng National Taxi Council of a shutdown today.

Mbalula says resorting to shutting down services as an expression of disagreement with the quantum of the amount does nothing for the industry.
