Thousands sign petition calling for lifting of tobacco ban

Hundreds-of-thousands of South Africans have added their signatures to a petition addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa, calling for an end to the ban on the sale of tobacco.

This as the sale of tobacco products remain prohibited under level three lockdown.

The Johannesburg woman who started the petition, Bev Maclean, says she expected to receive about 20 000 signatures, but to her surprise, it was signed by more than 500 000 South Africans, both smokers, and non-smokers.

Meanwhile the strict lockdown regulations and uncertainty over job security is taking its toll on South African’s mental and physical health.

The organisation Lifeline says there has been a rapid increase in the daily calls of desperate people needing assistance as they struggle to cope.

Lifeline’s, Nomsa Bapele, has pleaded with citizens to make use of their services during these unprecedented times.
