Electoral body, the IEC says they are dealing and responding to complaints raised during yesterday’s highly contested local government elections.

South Africans casted their vote yesterday to chose local leadership.

The IEC announced late last night that by five o’clock yesterday afternoon, over 8 million people had cast their votes at 23 148 voting stations.

The commission says it notes the concerns that some registered voters were not able to find their names on the voters roll, meaning they could not vote, despite having applied to do so.

IEC Commissioner Nomsa Masuku says other problems were that of voting stations being unable to open and a shortage of ballot papers.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mawethu Mosery, has confirmed that over 7000 people were turned away from various voting stations across the country.

He says that 200 complaints were registered from voters last night.

Some of those turned away ended up not voting due to various reasons.
