Richards Bay FC coach Brandon Truter believes Magesi FC hold the favourites tag ahead of their Carling Knockout semi final clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday. The Natal Rich Boyz will contest their second successive semi final in this competition, while newboys Magesi will continue their fairytale cup run after gaining promotion into the top division.
Brandon Truter’s men will, once again, enjoy home ground advantage in this competition after overcoming the challenges of Sekhukhune United and Cape Town City at Umlazi in the round of 16 and the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Clinton Larsen’s troops have made a decent start to top flight football since gaining promotion after winning the 2023/4 Motsepe Foundation Championship. The Limpopo-based outfit has collected 6 points from six games in the Betway Premiership, with their sole victory coming away from home against Golden Arrows. They held Kaizer Chiefs to a 2-2 draw in their previous league match, and caused the biggest upset so far this season when they eliminated Orlando Pirates, 3-2 in round one of the Carling Knockout.
“I think Magesi is favourites, with beating Pirates and getting a result against Chiefs as well,” said Truter speaking to the media.
“Clinton has done fantastically well with the team in promoting them and, wouldn’t say punching above their weight, but have shown after the Pirates game that it wasn’t a fluke as well. They have the results at this moment behind them and I think that makes them favourites. What counts at this moment is that we are home and we have our supporters, the whole KZN is behind us.”
