Police Minister Bheki Cele has thrown Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole under the bus at the South African Human Rights Commission.

The commission is hearing testimony into the July unrest in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, where more than 300 people died during the looting and riot in both provinces.

In a statement, Cele has revealed that Sitole was nowhere to be found during that fateful week of unrest.

He says he had to settle to working with the national deputy commissioner instead, after he could not get hold Sitole.

When he appeared at the HRC on Tuesday, Sitole appeared to be clueless on certain things that happened during the unrest and could not even recall the number of people who died in Phoenix.

Meanwhile, in his defence Sitole argued that that he was not missing in action and that Cele knew how and where to reach him if he needed to.
