Police say the suspects involved in the Rosettenville, Johannesburg shooting during a botched cash-in-transit heist are hardcore criminals.

The group are said to have been planning a cash-in-transit heist but were intercepted by a highly trained police team.

Minister Bheki Cele says police had been monitoring the movement of the group of about 25 gunmen since last week.

Eight of the suspects were killed during the shootout while another group was arrested.

Cele says most of the weapons found on the suspects are used in the police and defence force.

He says they will be taking the guns for ballistic testing.
