Former President Thabo Mbeki says the outcome of the local government elections for the ANC represents a serious reversal for the progressive movement and a significant advance for the right-wing forces.
He wrote an eight-page letter to ANC Deputy Secretary-General, Jessie Duarte.
For the first time since the first democratic election in 1994, the party’s support fell below 50% in most municipalities.
Mbeki has identified four urgent tasks for the ANC.
These are the renewal of the party, social compacts, ensuring a truly capable developmental state, and implementing election promises.
