The devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal have claimed the lives of at least 443 people, while 63 are still declared missing.
Premier Sihle Zikalala says over 550 schools in the province were either destroyed or sustained some form of damage. Almost 100 schools would need mobile classes so teaching can continue.
On Monday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster as a result of these floods.
Meanwhile, Social Development deputy minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu says the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is providing social relief of distress to families affected by the floods in this province.
The value of vouchers has been significantly increased.
Department’s spokesperson, Lumka Oliphant, says the relief takes the form of food vouchers, school uniforms and blankets.
