Premier Sihle Zikalala says there will be transparency in the distribution of the disaster relief funds for KwaZulu-Natal.

Zikalala made this promise at the provincial legislature today after President Cyril Ramaphosa last week announced that R1 billion would be set aside to aid relief and recovery efforts.

There has been concerns from citizens, opposition parties as well as lobby groups who wanted government to outline steps to prevent corruption and fraud regarding the disaster relief funds.

National government announced the establishment of an oversight task team will ensure that the looting of funds does not happen again. This team is tasked to keep an eye over the dispensing of relief funding in flood-stricken KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Zikalala says government is setting up an oversight structure to ensure all funds allocated to the disaster were actually used for that.
