Public Enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan says there is no need to declare the energy crisis in the country a state of emergency.

Gordhan’s comments follow calls for a state of disaster to be declared at the power utility, as rolling blackouts have become the single greatest threat to South Africa’s economic recovery.

The DA’s Ghaleb Cachalia has called on government to allow provinces and municipalities with capacity to generate electricity to do so.

Eskom is currently implementing stage two load-shedding until Monday.

However answering questions during Parliament’s Economic Cluster virtual hybrid meeting, Gordhan has said there is no chance of a total grid collapse.
