The South African government has reiterated it is not taking sides in the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has urged its citizens to refrain from doing so.

During a parliamentary debate on the impact of the conflict, International Relations and Cooperation deputy minister, Candith Mashego-Dlamini, says government stands by its decision, insisting on mediation, dialogue and negotiations to stop the war.

She says it will not condemn its anti-apartheid ally Russia.

EFF Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu says Russia is acting within its own rights in invading its neighbour, adding that mediation and dialogue should continue to be encouraged.
