South Africa is at risk of being placed on a consolidated watch list of countries considered to be kidnapping hotspots.
This is according to specialist niche insurer iTOO’s Catia Folgore.
Figures by the police show kidnappings soared by 133% from 2010/2011 to 2019/2020 financial years. In the latest case, the four Moti brothers were kidnapped in Polokwane on their way to school.
They were released about three weeks later unharmed.
Folgore says kidnapping is becoming big business in the country, with well-organised syndicates often planning their attacks for weeks and meticulously studying their victims before striking.
