UN urges governments to be transparent and accountable in Covid-19 response

The United Nations says the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic has resulted in major social, political and legal challenges globally.

UN secretary-general, António Guterres, says as states adopt emergency measures, it is critical that they continue to uphold the rule of law, protect and respect international standards and basic principles of legality, and the right to access justice, remedies and due process. He adds governments must do more to listen to citizens demanding change:

Meanwhile the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa is 651 521 while the total number of deaths is 15 641.

The minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, confirmed the latest numbers.

He also says the total number of recoveries is 583 126.
