Unemployment Continues to be on the Rise

South Africa’s unemployment rate has increased by 0.1 of a percentage point to 32.6% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.

Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, has announced the quarterly Labour Force Survey today, saying about 28 000 fewer people were employed in this quarter.

The Eastern Cape recorded the highest official and expanded unemployment rates at 49.6%.

The survey shows youth aged 15-24 years and 25-34 years recorded the highest unemployment rates of 63.3-percent and 41.3-percent respectively.
