Members of education union National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) in KwaZulu-Natal will down tools today at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Umlazi, south of Durban.
The protest comes after salary negotiations with the employer deadlocked.
Union members are demanding an eight percent salary increase across the board, while the university is offering 3.3%.
They also want a monthly housing allowance of three and a half thousand rand, and for all eligible workers to be given permanent status.
Nehawu says the university was served with the notice to strike on Monday.
