The Constitutional Court has granted the murderer of South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani, Janus Walus leave to appeal his parole.

Delivering the ConCourt’s judgment, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo says the court has found that the decision by the correctional services Minister in 2020 not to grant Walus parole, was irrational.

Walus is serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of SACP leader Hani, at his Boksburg home.

The Polish immigrant, who was convicted along with his late accomplice Clive Derby-Lewis, will be a free man in about 10 days, after the ConCourt’s ruling this afternoon.

Here is Zondo delivering the judgment.
