Angelique Coetzee has stepped down as Chairperson of the South African Medical Association’s (SAMA) Board of Directors.
During an interview last month, Coetzee expressed that the admission processes to medical schools were highly politicised, that race played a significant role in determining acceptance to medical faculties, and different criteria exist for different race groups with regard to admission requirements.
She has since apologised for her statement.
The current Vice-Chairperson of the SAMA Board, Mvuyisi Mzukwa, will be Interim Chairperson until a permanent replacement for Coetzee is found.
