The Institute of Security Studies (ISS) says parents and guardians need to vigilant about the whereabouts of their children and loved ones following a surge in kidnappings, in South Africa.

A criminal intelligence report released by the ISS has revealed that kidnappings rose by 60% this year alone.

Allegations have also emerged that police and private security companies are involved in some of these illegal activities.

The report shows that the cases involve both rich and middle class families with at least a R50-million ransom being demanded.

It is understood a network of multinational criminals operates in this country with the help of some corrupt police officials.
