The World Health Organisation’s African Region says the continent cannot be allowed to become a hotspot for emerging infectious diseases.
There has been a 63-percent increase in the number of zoonotic outbreaks like Ebola and monkeypox in the region from 2012 to 2022, compared to the period between 2001 and 2011.
W.H.O Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, says monkeypox cases have increased in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Nigeria.
