The World Health Organisation (WHO) says with the increased global transmission of COVID-19 variants of concern including the Delta variant, lifting restrictions too quickly could be disastrous for those who are not vaccinated.
WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, says despite this at least 10% of the world’s population should be vaccinated by September, and 30% by December this year.
This means to reach the September target the world will require an additional 250 million doses of vaccines and 100 million of them should be available between now and July.
Ghebreyesus says the inequitable distribution of vaccines has allowed the virus to continue spreading.
