We Are Capacitated to Face this Challenge – IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says this year’s Local Government Election (LGE) will be the toughest they have ever delivered since the dawn of democracy.

The IEC has been briefing the media in Gauteng, following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, that the local elections of 2021 will be held on the 27 of October.

The IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, says due to COVID-19 restrictions and protocols, many events and campaigns that usually coincide with holding a successful election cannot run as normal.

Mamabolo says they will be using other countries who have held that elections amid the pandemic, as case studies to ensure the voting process does not become a COVID-19 super spreader event.
