Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Barbara Creecy, says the protection of iconic wild animals must be prioritised from the cruelty of commercial exploitation.

Creecy has released the long-awaited high-level panel report in Pretoria, on the management, breeding, hunting, trade and handling of elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros in the country.

The 580-page High-Level Panel report is the result of nearly two years of often-heated discussion and research by a panel of specialists assembled by the Minister, with more than 70 written submissions from individuals and organisations.

Creecy says work has already begun on a draft Policy Position on implications of the report’s recommendations.
