The long-running arms deal and money laundering case against former President Jacob Zuma has returned to the Pietermaritzburg High Court today for a pre-trial hearing.
However, the proceedings may face further delays as Zuma’s legal team continues its efforts to have State Prosecutor Billy Downer removed from the case.
Zuma has argued in writing that Downer’s involvement could compromise his right to a fair trial due to alleged bias.
In response, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has filed a notice of intention to oppose Zuma’s application for Downer’s recusal.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga has stated that Zuma’s appeal has no prospects of success.
