Former President Jacob Zuma has officially begun serving his 15 month prison sentence.
Prison authorities have confirmed that Zuma was admitted in the Estcourt Correctional Centre last night. He handed himself over to police just before midnight last night as per the Constitutional Court order.
Zuma will undergo several admission processes as per the Department of Correctional Service’s regulations.
Zuma was meant to serve his time at Westville Prison, but with Estcourt having a medical wing, and Zuma protesting that his poor health may be further compromised in other prisons, may have been a reason for the abrupt change.
Correctional Services Spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, says other relevant prescripts pertaining to admitting and orientating newly incarcerated persons will also be followed and executed.
