The nominees for the third edition of the Basadi in Music Awards (BIMAs) have been announced. The presentation ceremony will take place at Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 10 August. The nominees’ ceremony was hosted virtually by media personality Ipeleng Selepe and featured captivating performances from Wanda Baloyi, Makhanj, and DJ Mmatsheko Mosito. The nominations list includes our very own i-Pre-Party co-host, DJ Happygal, who is known by fans as Gorgeous. Happygal has been nominated under the “DJ OF THE YEAR” category and she is definitely deserving of this recognition.

The KwaZulu-Natal DJ grew up in an under-resourced township called Clermont, where opportunities were scarce. However, her love for music motivated her to pursue a career as a DJ. Despite the challenges of growing up in a community with few success stories, she is making waves in the music industry. In 2006, after completing high school, she left for Durban to study Human Resources Management at the Durban University of Technology. A year later, she met a fellow student who was also an aspiring DJ and learned the basics of the DJ business from her.
She believes that music in this country is heading in a new direction and is delighted about this.
“I’m so glad that music in this country is growing so fast and I’m also happy that people are noticing me,”
she says.
