Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, says load-shedding is a critical issue affecting all South Africans, disrupting production, operations, and livelihoods.
Delivering the last budget of the 6th administration, the minister says reforming the energy sector would lead to long-term energy security.
The minister says to promote further investments in renewable energy, this budget proposes an increase in the limit for renewable energy projects that can qualify for the carbon offsets regime, from 15 megawatts to 30 megawatts.
He says he hopes that by a combination of private investment in new energy projects, rooftop solar, and “improvements in Eskom’s generation fleet” load shedding will be reduced.
