The Health Professionals Council of South Africa says it is taking steps to address the growing problem of bogus doctors infiltrating the healthcare system.

This comes after the Gauteng Department of Health took legal action against a bogus TikTok doctor, famously known as Dr Matthew Lani.

It is alleged that Lani stole a second-year medical intern’s identity.

On TikTok, he has been giving medical advice to his followers and those who need health tips.

The council’s CEO, Magome Masike says Lani is not registered as a health practitioner in South Africa and that practicing medicine without proper registration constitutes to be a criminal offense.
