Born and raised in the vibrant township of Umlazi, Durban, Thandeka ‘De Rose’ Cele is a 24-year-old singer, songwriter, and composer making her mark as one of KZN’s most promising Amapiano talents. Her musical journey began in her high school years, where she first explored her voice as part of both the school and church choir — a foundation that would shape her passion for performance and storytelling.
A natural-born creative, De Rose also found comfort and self-expression in poetry, often performing her work at family and community gatherings. This early love for words and rhythm evolved into a powerful connection with music — one that continues to define her artistry today.
Raised in a household filled with music and creative energy, De Rose’s passion for sound was nurtured from an early age. Now, as she collaborates with talented artists across South Africa, she remains grounded in authenticity, using her personal story and lived experiences to inspire her songwriting.
With her breakout single “Lutho” capturing hearts and cementing her presence in the local music scene, De Rose is not just a rising star — she’s a storyteller, a voice for her generation, and proof that dreams from Umlazi can reach every corner of Mzansi.

1. For those who may not know you beyond the name, who is Thandeka “De Rose” Cele in your own words?
I am a versatile and optimistic young woman from Umlazi, here to stay—spreading joy and smiles to the world. Most importantly, I am living proof that you can do it!
2. Where did your journey with creativity and music/media begin—was it something you always knew you wanted to do?
I always knew I was born for this. When my primary school teacher once said, “Your voice will take you places,” I believed it and ran with it—and now, it’s truly happening.
3. What inspired the stage name De Rose?
The name De Rose was inspired by both my nickname and my mother’s nickname. It’s my way of building a legacy.
4. As someone who’s worn different hats in the industry, which role challenges you the most, and which role gives you the most joy?
One of my challenges has been finding my own voice within my craft. Being far from home made it even tougher, but I’ve kept fighting through it. The greatest joy is when a song comes out exactly as I imagined—or even better. I truly love creating.
5. Let’s talk about your current feature single “Lutho”, how did this hit come about?
Honestly, I don’t personally relate to that song. I always say: “As creatives, we step into other people’s shoes—we become vessels for voices.” Thanks to the incredible producers behind the work.
8. In the process of creating “Lutho”, did you imagine the impact that it now has prior to the release?
I went to the session very late, recovering from a heavy flu. I didn’t think much of it, recorded, and went home. The next day I woke up, went to work—and boom—the song was blowing up on TikTok! God is too real.
7. What do you feel sets your work and your sound/creative identity apart from others in the industry?
What I love most is versatility—how my voice can adapt to any sound at any moment. I truly believe I am art.
8. Who are some of the local or international influences that continue to inspire you?
My dream collaborations would be with Tiwa Savage (that Afrobeat energy is unmatched), Babalwa M, and Tyla—my top three.

9. If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what would you be?
I’m also working on becoming a voice-over artist. I believe in my voice so much that it will set me free—just like my primary school teacher once said.
10. Many young women look up to you—what advice would you give to a young girl in KZN who wants to follow your footsteps?
My message to others would be: “Okudliwe isikhonyana kuyobuya kuphindiwe”—whatever you’ve lost will return to you doubled. Remember: no one is like you, and no one can do it like you.
11. Any future for you as an artist— what can your fans look forward to in your career?
The future holds more music, more music, and exciting international collaborations on the way.
In March 2025, De Rose released her chart-topping single “Hello” featuring Sfarzo Tee, which quickly became a nationwide sensation. The track soared to the top of multiple streaming charts and amassed over one million streams within its first month of release — a remarkable milestone that solidified her presence in South Africa’s music scene and significantly expanded her digital footprint.
Following that success, De Rose once again captured the hearts of fans across the country with her latest hit single “Lutho,” a powerful collaboration with the talented DJ Jaivane. The song has resonated deeply with listeners, earning widespread praise for its emotive vocals, soulful production, and relatable storytelling.
Today, De Rose continues to grow her influence and reach, boasting an impressive 12,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify — a testament to her rapidly rising profile and the authenticity that defines her sound.
