Gagasi FM Sports specialist Mike Makaab believes cup specialists Orlando Pirates should benchmark their success on league performances, and calls for the Buccaneers to be more consistent in the league. Pirates have struggled for consistency in the DSTV Premiership this season, which sees them 13 points adrift off leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who also have 3 games in hand. Their latest set back was a 2-1 loss against an in form Sekhukhune United side that has won 5 league games on the spin.

Pirates have enjoyed considerable success in cup competitions since the arrival of Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro in 2022, who has won two MTN 8 titles and the Nedbank Cup in almost 2 years at the club. Riveiro guided the Bucanners to a second place finish in the 2022/23 season and are still in with a chance of securing that CAF Champions league spot this season. Speaking on Extratime on Gagasi FM Mike Makaab believes the Bucaneers should aim for more consistency in league performance, as it is a better benchmark for success.

“Sadly Pirates haven’t taken their cup form into the league and we always talk about this it is not a cliche it is the truth, you will measure yourself by the season that you have in the league. That determines the consistency that will give you an idea of where you sit in the pecking order in terms of the quality of your team and the consistent quality that your team is able to produce,” said Makaab.

“We are not detracting that Pirates have become the cup kings, there is nothing wrong with that but you speak to anybody in the game and I am sure even if you speak to the chairman himself and you ask him what is the benchmark that you will measure your team against and that will be the Premiership title,” Makaab added.
