Mkay Music bags A Nomination at The SA Radio Awards

The South African radio industry is renowned for its talented and charismatic personalities, and one name that has been making waves recently is Mthokozisi Mbele Known as Mkay Music. Our very own On-air personality, Mkay Music has been nominated for a prestigious honor at the SA Radio Awards, in the category of Bright Star Inductees.

Now in its 13th year, the Radio Awards continue to honour excellence in the categories of Campus, Community, Public Broadcast (PBS), Commercial, Podcast, and Internet radio, setting industry benchmarks for outstanding achievements.

The judging process involved the meticulous evaluation of entries by a panel of more than 50 judges and thorough scrutiny by BDO South Africa, the official auditors of the awards. To be eligible, entries had to have been broadcast on FM or AM radio, (excluding those in the internet radio category) between April 1, 2022, and March 31 2023.

Mbele’s journey into the world of radio has been nothing short of inspiring. Hailing from humble beginnings, Mkay’s passion for radio was ignited at a young age. His magnetic personality and natural flair for communication quickly caught the attention of the industry insiders, paving the way for his entry into the competitive realm of radio broadcasting.

Taking to Instagram to appreciate the nomination, Mbele wrote: “I AM NOMINATED AT THIS YEARS @saradioawards for the BRIGHT STAR CATEGORY 🙌🏾🙌🏾😭😭😭🔥🔥🔥 Nkulunkulu kanti unjani!!!!!!!!”

How do you feel?

I am in disbelief and ore of what God can do in His timing. A bag of mixed emotions, but as soon as I saw, through an industry colleague who’s also nominated in the category, I was shaking and just had to call my Content Specialist to verify what I was seeing online because I was in DISBELIEF. I’ve always put my best foot forward in every link, show preparations and station campaign – because I treat everything I do on radio as if it’s the last time I’ll do it. And so, to be recognised by such a huge academy of the industry, is a reminder that Mkay – you’re on the right path. In a nutshell, I’m grateful.

What does this nomination means to you?

This nomination is a reminder for me that as a broadcaster of the No.1 Regional Commercial Radio Station in South Africa – Gagasi FM, I’VE GOT TALENT! There are not that many platforms that can uplift upcoming talent like Gagasi FM, but this station afforded me that opportunity and with this nomination, I’m reminded that when you are given an opportunity to shine, shine as bright as you can, give it your all and someone will see your efforts and when the time is right – you’ll get your flowers!
