It’s been five years since South Africans last received a full body of work from one of the country’s most distinct voices. On 4 July, Samthing Soweto returns with a full-length studio album titled Touch Is a Move, Good Morning.
The title draws from two personal traditions. “Touch Is a Move” echoes a childhood rule: once you touched a piece in any game, you had to make the move — no hesitation, no take-backs. “Good Morning” comes from a daily ritual Samkelo began in 2023, when he greeted his audience each morning with a simple “good morning” — a ceremonial way of staying connected.
Today, he invites fans and music lovers into the first chapter of this new era with the pre-add single “Deda.”

Written with his trademark sensitivity and anchored by John Lundun’s soulful electronic production, “Deda” is a plea wrapped in poetry. Inspired by the Nguni proverb “mabudede ubumnyama buvele ukukhanya” — “let the darkness retreat so that light may come” — the song captures the tension of loving someone drawn to nightlife, while praying for their safe return. It’s tender, vulnerable, and unmistakably Samthing Soweto. “Deda” follows the hit single “Amagents,” a father’s message to his daughter that topped the South African charts and went double platinum. Both tracks will appear on Touch Is a Move, Good Morning. From a cappella roots with The Soil, to the voice behind the global hit “Akanamali”, to the genre-bending creator of Isiphithiphithi, Samthing Soweto has always had his finger on the pulse of his people. With Touch Is a Move, Good Morning, he says: hello world — let’s get going. Winter is here and Samthing Soweto has something to keep us warm.
