SPHEctacula & DJ Naves

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — 9 OCTOBER 2026 — Summer has a sound. And this year, it goes “Gu Gu Gu.”
South African dance music heavyweights SPHEctacula & DJ Naves, affectionately known as the Kings of the Weekend, are back with their latest festive-season weapon, “Gu Gu Gu,” an exuberant Gqom collaboration featuring Mgilane, Sazified, Thobeka and Niseni.

OUT NOW!

“Gu Gu Gu” is OUT NOW, and it arrives with the kind of uncomplicated, infectious energy that great summer records are made of: a commanding beat, a chant you cannot shake, voices that demand participation and a groove that seems to get bigger every time the volume goes up. This is not music asking you to sit still. It is music asking you to move.

At the heart of “Gu Gu Gu” is an idea as simple as it is powerful: have fun with the music.
What began with a conversation about wanting to work with Niseni — sparked through the duo’s radio world — organically evolved into a full-blown collaboration. The result is a record that feels less manufactured than discovered, as though the song found its own destination somewhere between the studio, the dance floor and the summer streets.

Mgilane sets the record in motion, establishing the mood before the track steadily builds into its unmistakable rhythmic identity. Sazified, Thobeka and Niseni add further colour and character, while the production keeps the record rooted in the hypnotic, percussive energy that has made Gqom such an enduring force in South African popular culture.

Behind the boards, DJ Ligwa and Ben Ten contribute to the production, with additional production from veteran hitmaker DJ Cleo, giving “Gu Gu Gu” another layer of experience and sonic weight. The result is five minutes designed to be remembered.

“Gu Gu Gu” also arrives at an important point in the SPHEctacula & DJ Naves story.
For more than a decade, the duo have built a reputation around records that understand something fundamental about South African dance music: a hit is not simply something you listen to — it is something you experience together.

That philosophy has run through their catalogue, from the enduring energy of “Bhampa” featuring Beast, Tipcee and DJ Tira — a record that became a notable dance-floor and digital moment — through “Ngeke,” “Okokoko,” “Matha,” “Bafuna Some More” and “Moyowodwa.” Their 2021 10 Years And Counting album further captured the breadth of their approach, while recent releases have continued to place their sound firmly within contemporary Gqom and South African dance music.

In 2024, Moyowodwa brought the duo together with Sazified and Beast RSA, with the track described at the time as a festive-season record built around powerful bass and infectious rhythms.
Then came “Bayathakatha” in 2026, featuring Dladla Mshunqisi, Beast RSA and Sazified — a record the duo framed around legacy, consistency and the ability to keep evolving without losing their roots.
If Bayathakatha was a declaration that the Kings were still here, “Gu Gu Gu” is the celebration that follows. And it may be their most immediately infectious one yet.

There is a particular magic to a summer song. You know it when you hear it.
It is the record that escapes the studio and starts appearing everywhere: from cars with the windows down to backyard gatherings, from radio sets to festival stages, from late-night clubs to the first party of December.
“Gu Gu Gu” has been built for precisely that journey.

Its greatest strength may be its simplicity. The chant is easy to remember. The rhythm is impossible to ignore. The production leaves enough room for the audience to become part of the record. And that is where SPHEctacula & DJ Naves have always understood the assignment. Their music has consistently lived at the intersection of radio and nightlife, nostalgia and reinvention, Durban energy and nationwide appeal.

THE CHARTS ARE NEXT

Every summer needs its anthem.
“Gu Gu Gu” is making its case.
Not because it is trying to sound like a summer record, but because it understands what summer music is supposed to do: bring people together, create a moment and refuse to let the energy drop.
From the first beat to the final chant, this is SPHEctacula & DJ Naves doing what they have spent years doing best — turning rhythm into a shared experience.
The Kings of the Weekend have arrived with another one.

This summer, there is only one question:
GU GU GU?

“Gu Gu Gu” by SPHEctacula & DJ Naves featuring Mgilane, Sazified, Thobeka & Niseni is OUT NOW on all major streaming platforms.
