The ANC in eThekwini says it is not surprised by former regional chairperson and ex-eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede’s decision to join the MK Party.
The party’s regional leadership, led by regional coordinator Thanduxolo Sabela, briefed the media in Durban on Thursday, where it addressed Gumede’s recent political move.
Last week, Gumede was unveiled as the MK Party’s deputy convenor in KwaZulu-Natal, a development that has drawn significant attention across the province’s political landscape.
Gumede served as eThekwini Mayor from 2016 to 2019. In 2021, she stepped aside from her ANC leadership positions in line with the party’s step-aside rule after being charged in connection with the Durban Solid Waste tender corruption case.
Speaking during the media briefing, Sabela said Gumede has not played an active role in ANC structures for several years, adding that her departure does not come as a surprise to the organisation.
