Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his troops would need to perform at a very high level to overcome the challenge of top ranked African side Morocco, when they meet in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash at Stade de San Pedro on Tuesday evening. South Africa go into this clash after giving a good account of themselves in the group stages, finishing as runners up in Group E with four points. They will meet an Atlas Lions team that is unbeaten so far in the tournament after topping group F with two wins and a draw.
The 34th edition of Africa’s biggest football competition has produced some huge upsets with four of the top five ranked teams (Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt) already knocked out of the tournament. The Belgian mentor and his players will be hopeful of keeping that trend and eliminate the top ranked African team.
Bafana got the better of Morocco the last time the two teams met, as they got a 2-1 victory in the qualifiers of the on-going tournament in June 2023. Broos says his team will take huge confidence from that win but believes his boys have to perform at a very high level to beat the World Cup semi finalists.
