The Department of Water and Sanitation has opened 36 criminal cases against 26 municipalities across the country for sewage spills.

The Department says it opened criminal cases against municipalities for repeated sewage spills or failing to comply with government clean-up directives.

Last month the Govan Mbeki local muncipality was slapped with a R200 million fine for pumping raw sewage into rivers.

The Ethekwini Municipality is also in trouble with the Democratic Alliance having secured a trial date against it for its alleged negligence in addressing the city’s sewage and water crisis.
