Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced temporary fuel levy cuts to ease pressure on households and businesses amid rising fuel prices.
Tabling the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in Parliament this afternoon, Godongwana says the diesel levy will be cut by R3 per litre and the petrol levy by R1.50 a litre from the 4th of November until the 1st of December.
The relief will be reduced in January to R1.50 a litre for diesel and R1 for petrol.
Godongwana says the measures will provide 10 billion rand in relief, funded by returning money previously transferred to the Central Energy Fund to the National Revenue Fund.
“We are aware of the pressure that raises the fuel prices appraising on households and businesses. To provide temporary releif, the fuel levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol,” said Godongwana.

Godongwana added that free basic services benefit 11 million households, while subsidised education reaches more than 77% of school-going children, including through the National School Nutrition Programme.
He says the funding aims to address stunting and malnutrition, which can affect children’s physical development and ability to learn.
