Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has slammed the scheduling of the PSL fixtures ahead of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, which will kick-off in January next year. The Belgian mentor was speaking during his squad announcement press conference for South Africa’s FIFA World Cup qualifers against Benin and Rwanda at the SABC Studios on Friday afternoon. This seasons PSL fixture schedule has been jam-packed with the return of the league cup (Carling knockout) and the introduction of a new continental tournament – The African Football League. This has led to DSTV Premiership fixtures going on until the very last day of the year, with teams only taking a break during the AFCON tournament.

Broos has lamented the gruiling fixture schedules for teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, who have a number of players in his national squad, and the lack of rest ahead of the continental show piece next year. The former AFCON winner will only assemble his players for the tournament in early January and will have just over a week to prepare for South Africa’s tournament opener against Mali on 16 January 2024.
