The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution as heavy rain, lightning and thunder are reported in various parts of the province.
This follows the South African Weather Service issuing a Yellow Level 6 weather warning affecting various parts of the KZN.
Ethekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Ndwendwe Ray Nonyeni, Umndoni and Umnzumbe are amongst the affected municipalities. Furthermore, SAWS has also predicted 80% chances of rain throughout the KZN province for the next two days.
It is also predicted that the disruptive rain which may lead to flooding of roads, settlements and damage to infrastructure is expected along the South Coast.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma says motorists should reduce speed, keep a safe following distance and remain vigilant on the roads.
Duma has also welcomed the vigilance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate and other teams monitoring road infrastructure as the rainy season approaches.
MEC spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya has reiterated that the RTI is already on standby and monitoring the situation across the province.
“The RTI and Human Settlements team is aware that it should would work in dedication as the rain season is upon us. This is why many areas have been under observation as we are aware of the damage caused by floods and heavy rains.”
Civilians are advised to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles and if trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and move to higher ground.
