Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has defended the department’s approximately R31 million expenditure on South Africa’s FIFA World Cup programme, insisting there is “nothing to hide.”
The spending has come under fire from opposition political parties, which have described it as wasteful.
Department spokesperson Zimasa Velaphi says the programme involved 151 participants travelling to Mexico and the United States, excluding service providers. She adds that private sponsors covered a portion of the costs.
Velaphi says the department is still finalising the reconciliation of sponsor contributions before releasing the complete financial breakdown.
