KZN football legend Vuma Mfeka believes KwaZulu-Natal based football teams should do more to make use of former players and legends in the local game, to enhance the success of the teams. Mfeka was speaking on Extratime on Gagasi FM paying tribute to AmaZulu FC legend Joel Faya who sadly passed away on Friday at the age of 66. Mfeka was Faya’s senior when they played together at Usuthu between 1978 and 1984, and remembers him as one of the most prolific strikers of his time.
“There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Joel Faya was a prolific striker, he scored many many goals. He played for AmaZulu and was one of the best strikers in South Africa, there’s no player who played during our era who does not know Joel Faya. He had great speed and accuracy he scored many tricky goals, but off the field he was very respectful he respected elderly people like Sugar Ray Xulu, Cedric Mfeka, Eric Nduna KaNdaba Ngidi and myself,” said Mfeka.
Mfeka also voiced his concern on the performances of KZN teams in the PSL and believes that teams should rope in former players to contribute and inspire young players. He made reference to Mamelodi Sundowns’ success and how the club utilise former players within their structures.
“My concern is that we don’t use them (the legends) profitably in our teams, you know, to assist us even in development and in the professional teams. You can see our teams are not doing well in the Premier league, but if you look at other teams like Sundowns you will see that their former players are always involved. They have got more than 25 former players who are part of the current team because that is the inspiration to the current players. So in KZN we have got that problem that our veterans are not utilized by the teams, I think that is one of the reasons why our teams are not doing so well in the Premier League,” the veteran concluded.
